SMC 101 Express Lane Equity Study, Feedback Needed

You are probably already aware of the San Mateo 101 Express Lanes Project, which will create 22 miles of express lanes on U.S. 101 from the San Mateo County/Santa Clara County line to I-380 in South San Francisco. But did you know about the Equity Study going on now which will help to determine how some of the proceeds of the toll lanes will be spent? There is an opportunity to weigh in on that happening right now. See below for info on the meetings and how to provide input.

Back in 2019/20, SVBC and you participated in the US-101 Mobility Action Plan. The new Equity Study builds off the work done then, which included an extensive list of equity-oriented actions that address barriers to transportation. The Equity Study will take the next steps of evaluating equity options and strategies, including a pilot program that can evolve over time. The goal of the proposed program is to 1) provide additional accessibility and benefits to the overall project for people who are low income or otherwise have been underserved and 2) to provide transportation alternatives to driving single occupancy vehicles on the highway.

There are now four alternatives that are being considered for funding. These are not mutually exclusive. The project managers may decide to choose 1-4 of these alternatives to implement.

  1. Express Lane Toll Benefit – pre-loaded $50 toll tags

  2. Transit Benefit – $50 cash-on-Clipper benefits

  3. Place-Based Improvements – biking, walking, and transit safety improvements in historically underserved communities in SMC on the 101 corridor

  4. Carpool Rewards Program – provide carpool cash benefit up to $50/year

Virtual Community Meeting

On Thursday, March 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., a virtual meeting will be held to share the proposed Equity Program alternatives.
