SVBC LCI Squad

Reports To: Program Manager, Education Programs Coordinator, or other staff member depending on the class

Status: Part-time

Hours: Scheduled on demand, depending on classes, 1.5-20 hours per week on some weeks, some weeks may be 0.

Timeframes:  Year around (mostly March - October), mostly in-person with-bicycle classes and some presentation classes in person and virtual.

Location: Santa Clara County (SCC) and San Mateo County (SMC), CA

 

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization that seeks to build healthier and more just communities by making bicycling safe and accessible for everyone. Climate change, poor human health, unsafe roads, high cost of living, and traffic congestion are all modern day problems that pose a real threat to the world as we know it. If you like waking up every morning to tackle these big problems and view the bicycle as an important part of the solution, we’d like you to join Team SVBC! The power of the bike movement resides in the thousands of passionate people who ride bicycles. That’s why SVBC is rooted in community organizing and educating. We’re looking for people who have experience educating the community around the bicycle, specifically people who are League Cycling Instructors (LCI). SVBC believes change occurs by bringing people together to advance a common cause.

SVBC has an ongoing need for SVBC LCI Squad instructors to assist SVBC staff in providing various in-person with-bicycle classes and some presentation classes in person and virtual in San Mateo and Santa Clara County. Ideal candidates would have experience in educating people of various ages, working with volunteers and schools other instructors. A typical shift might include picking up supplies and a vehicle (or being able to bike the supplies to a location), setting up, training various ages, and etc. The applicant should also have an understanding of how to manage multiple tasks & projects, navigating on-site health and PPE requirements, leading, and connecting with youth and volunteers, and being a conduit of information to our community. Some assignments may require proof of COVID vaccination.

It’s important to note that SVBC is deeply committed to advancing its mission through a lens of cultural humility and social justice. Candidates should have a deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The right people would bring a perspective that helps build a diverse team, measured by a set of lived experiences that leads SVBC to be more successful in attracting a broad swath of people to live life joyfully through the bicycle.

 

Specifics we’re looking for:

  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude: can maintain a positive working relationship with staff, volunteers, schools, public and maintain an enthusiastic attitude daily with the youth.Passion for biking and teaching others how to bike

  • Experience teaching and engaging with youth and adults

  • Observing student’s behavior and providing appropriate safety guidance as per California’s regulations and guidelines

  • Operating trainings that teach others how to be great biking role models in the community

  • Demonstrated ability to work with difficult people in a way that wins them over and creates new supporters

  • Carrying heavy and necessary equipment to events, and workshops (bikes, signs, helmets, bike racks, boxes, etc.)

  • Managing volunteers with assistance from SVBC staff

  • Preparing reports for each event to be utilized for future planning

  • Responding in a timely fashion to SVBC staff regarding staffing/scheduling for events

  • Effectively communicating the mission, vision, and programs of SVBC and representing SVBC professionally in the community

Important Qualifications

  • Certified LAB League Cycling Instructor (LCI)

  • Knowledge of contemporary bicycling practices and safety regulations in order to teach others in a workshop or in an outdoors setting

  • Ability to speak in public in front of an audience, ideally to be entertaining and compelling

  • Mature understanding of racism, equity and inclusion

  • Ability to listen, and welcome feedback

  • Current, clean California drivers’ license

  • Able to lift 50 pounds

  • Access to cell phone

  • Flexibility and an ability to welcome, with a positive attitude, last-minute scheduling requests

  • Being an enthusiastic ambassador of SVBC’s mission and vision

Compensation: $62/hour for individuals who have LCI certification and specifically for roles requiring LCI certification.
