Want to promote bicycling? Become an SVBC Benchmarking Intern

Advocacy Guidelines

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition’s (SVBC) mission is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. You can read more about our advocacy campaigns and initiatives on our Better Biking page. We are looking for interns who can help support our work while gaining research and analysis skills.

Work Description

SVBC wants to create a series of benchmarking reports on ‘All stuff bicycle-related’ for cities in the two counties where we focus. The main areas of focus of the reports are

  1. Current bicycle related policies ( How many secure bike parking spaces are required per dwelling)

  2. Current bicycle infrastructure, (how many miles of Class II bike lanes exist)

  3. Reviewing bicycle plans for proposed new policies and infrastructure.

The purpose of these reports are to enable advocates to influence decision makers by showing how they compare to other cities and who they can reach out to to better understand how policies they don’t have are working.

We’re looking for up to three  interns who will gather this data, analyze it and then create comparative charts and graphs to be used to influence decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Do research via the internet on cities from Daly City to Gilroy

  • In some cases, analyze the data ( How many miles of bike lane are there per capita?)

  • Create reports of outcomes and findings. (Which city has the lowest bicycle collision rate/10K residents? )

  • Present outcomes to city staff, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 5-15 hour per week, 3-month minimum commitment

  • Ability to work independently towards goals

  • Strong oral and written communications skills

  • Strong proofreading and editing skills

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience or interest in bicycling, walking, active transportation, policy, planning, governmental processes or another related field

  • Desire to make getting around without a personal vehicle easier and safer.

This internship is unpaid, however, if you are a student, we can work with your university to provide course credit.

To apply, please send PDF versions of a cover letter and resume attached in email to John@bikesiliconvalley.org. Please include “Benchmarking Intern [Last Name]” in the subject line. Keep your resume limited to one page. In the cover letter, please explain why you are interested in this position and your passion behind bicycles and/or alternative transportation solutions.
