#BikeMatchSV – Progress and Support

As a response to the tolls of the pandemic, SVBC teamed up with Silicon Valley Bike Exchange (SVBE) to begin a #BikeMatchSV program in April. Modeled after a successful program in New York, the concept is simple – support people in need, particularly essential workers and others hard hit by job loss and various hardships, with a free, donated bike to get around. Three months into the program, the impact has been rewarding for both recipients and organizers.

Adriana, one of the recipients reflected, ‘I have always wanted to buy myself a bike, but I could not afford it, especially now during this time of need, where my finances and health are at risk due to the current 2020 COVID-19 pandemic we are undergoing. SVBE came into my life when I needed them the most, by providing me with a free bike. With my new bike, SVBE has gifted me with the privilege of taking control of my health, meaning that I can now use my bike not only for transportation but also for physical exercise’.

And, Andrew Yee, General Manager of SVBE writes, ‘The pandemic has certainly added new challenges to operating the Bicycle Exchange, but #BikeMatchSV has been a big bright spot. It’s been a true privilege to work with new donors and volunteers to help provide mobility to those in need. While the hundreds of bikes we donate each year are typically distributed by our nonprofit partners, I’ve been honored to distribute bikes directly to #BikeMatchSV recipients and witness the gratitude and excitement our life-changing vehicles generate.

How You Can Help
Donate a bike. Many hopeful people have requested a bike but requests outweigh donations and current inventory. If you have a bike sitting around that doesn’t get used, consider donating it. That bike could be the source of needed transportation, mobility, or inspiration to another person.

Volunteer Your Mechanic Skills. To ensure safe and sound bikes are distributed, each bike is tuned up and then checked for quality control by approved, skilled mechanics. Mechanics are needed for the initial tune up phase – share your skills!

“Demand for bikes unfortunately far outpaces supply and our volunteer mechanic capacity. Bike donations of all types really help. While a carbon fiber racing bike, full-suspension mountain bike, or geared kid’s bike may not make ideal commuter bikes, they can go a long way to help fund the parts we use to refurbish the bikes we donate. Don’t have a bike to donate? You can also help fund this project with a monetary donation here.” – Andrew Yee

If you or someone you know is in need, please do fill out the form to receive a donation. This email is focused on donations as we know that is a particular need right now to fill out the program. SVBE may not be able to match you right away but will try their hardest to get you a bike in the future.

Impact and Giving
At SVBC, we’re adapting and changing in many ways, while staying grounded and firm in others. The pandemic has solidified our belief that the world is deeply interconnected and dependent on kindness and compassion for survival. What we do today can impact our neighbor, our greater communities and future generations. If you’re able, please consider ways you can make a positive impact during this unsettling time.
