The 2nd BABC Bay in a Day
bike ride took place on July 22. Like the previous year,
the temperatures were in the triple digits for much of the
day, over much of the course.
Thirty seven 100 mile riders and fifty
seven 200 mile riders left Novato in the early morning and
headed towards Vallejo. After crossing the new Zampa
Bridge, the 100 mile riders stopped at the Orinda BART
station, and boarded BART for the trip to Daly City, where
they rejoined the 200 mile route.
The 200 mile riders continued through
the East Bay communities of Moraga, Castro Valley, Hayward
and Fremont, before rounding the south end of San Francisco
Bay, through Alviso, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto,
where they ate lunch.
After lunch, the 200 mile riders headed
west and north, through Portola Valley, Woodside, and up
Canada Road, to Skyline Drive. Then they rode through the
western edges of Burlingame, Milbrae and South San
Francisco, before going thru Daly City. Here the two routes
rejoined and headed north to the rest stop at the Presidio
in San Francisco before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.
Back in Marin County, the riders rode
thru Sausalito, Mill Valley, and portions of Tiburon, Corte
Madera and Larkspur before passing thru San Rafael. After a
scenic loop along the Bay, thru China Camp State Park, the
riders headed back to Novato for a well earned dinner.
The extreme temperatures prevented many
riders from completing what would normally have been very
doable. Some riders used BART to reduce the mileage they
would be riding, while others were moved forward along the
course or brought back to the start/finish by the
ever-vigilant SAG team patrolling the course. But even with
the heat and other obstacles, 30 single century riders and
31 double century riders were able to make their way back to
Novato under their own steam.
BABC extends a huge THANKS to Fehr and
Peers, a transportation consultanting firm and the
Presenting Sponsor of Bay in a Day. Special thanks also
goes to Clif Bar and Smart Water, for their valuable
contributions of funds and product and to Zipcar for
providing the much needed SAG vehicles and drivers to assist
in getting riders where their legs wouldn’t take them.
The following Bay Area clubs and
coalitions provided the volunteers to make the ride
possible. They all deserve a huge thank you from both
riders and BABC!
